DIY Forever: Paperback Wallets

Last night was our special DIY Forever adult craft night for the Adult Spring Reading Program. We upcycled some paperback covers into wallets using the library's new sewing machines.  We had a big crowd that had a great time constructing the wallets.  Unfortunately, I fail at planning ahead, and thus there were no pictures taken during the event.  But, click 'read more' to see the instructions and make your own!

The paperback wallet craft we did was inspired by the amazingly crafty blog maven, ReFabulous' own paperback wallets.  The instructions I made were an attempt to distill her very informative and detailed instructions into a series of short steps.  We split up the craft into various stations to compartmentalize and simplify the individual steps with the first instruction image below used as a kind of road map for the craft as a whole.  I precut many elements of the craft including the vinyl and lining.  If you want to do one, you will want a piece of vinyl and some card stock a little more than 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide.  The pattern that gets mentioned is just a piece of paper 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide with a fold in the middle and two folds at the top and bottom of about one inch.  Other than that, just follow the instructions here or at ReFabulous' site and you're golden!

Station 3 involved setting the snaps.  I had a traditional setting tool and a hand tool available so people could use what they preferred.

Everyone had a great time and went home with some fun new wallets featuring amazing sci-fi stuff or smoldering hot guys and gals on their covers.  Try making your own and post your results in comments!  We'd love to see your creations!
