DIY Forever: Melted Crayon Pendants

During this month's DIY Forever, we made pendants from melted crayons.  This was a wonderfully fun and simple craft that resulted in some marvelously complex and pretty pendants with ridiculously simple materials.  Click 'read more' to find out how and what you will need.

Materials needed

Small bezel pendant
Cord or chain on which to hang the pendant
Crayons
Heat gun, embossing tool, hair dryer, or even an oven set at a low setting
Craft knife or similar cutting/chopping tool

A few notes before the instructions . . . while you can certainly use any brand of crayon,  I found the most success with Crayola brand crayons.  The other brands seemed to contract a good deal more, once the crayon wax cooled.  This resulted in the wax pulling away from the lip and surface of the bezel and falling out.  If you don't have Crayola brand crayons or have this problem regardless, we have come up with a work-around.  Slice a thin piece of glue off of a hot-glue stick and place it in the bezel pendant before you arrange your crayon bits.  When heat is applied this slice of glue will melt and mingle with the crayon wax, adhering the wax to the pendant.

If you don't have a heat gun or embossing tool, you can use a hair dryer or oven instead.  When using a hair dryer for heating, you will need to be even more careful about the air flow pushing the crayons out of the pendant.  It still works, but it requires a little more patience.  When using your oven, I suggest placing the pendants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and heating it at a low temperature setting, around 200-250 degrees, and check on the melting wax every couple minutes.  Once the wax looks shiny and smooth inside the bezel pendant, remove from the oven and let cool for at least five minutes before handling.

Now, on to the instructions!

We hope you enjoy making these pendants as much as you'll enjoy wearing them!  Let us know what you think of this craft in comments!
